After suffering a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League match against Leicester City, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency stomach surgery and was put into an induced coma.

In the 88th minute,  the 27-year-old Nigerian international was trying to reach a cross when he struck the goalpost. He was treated on the pitch, but he still played, clearly uncomfortable. He needed urgent surgery on Monday night after more medical evaluations showed how serious his situation was. Doctors put him in a coma to control his heart rate and limit movement in order to speed up his recuperation.

In a statement, Nottingham Forest confirmed that Awoniyi is “recovering well” and underlined the significance of the players’ health and welfare.

The choice to permit Awoniyi to play after his injury was controversial as a result of the occurrence. After the game, club owner Evangelos Marinakis came onto the field to voice his displeasure with the way the matter was being handled. Since then, Forest has responded to the issue, saying that Marinakis’s actions were motivated by a strong emotional and caring commitment to the team’s well-being.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, has made 32 appearances this season, scoring two goals. The team is presently eighth in the Premier League, aiming for a Champions League berth with two games remaining.
