Hope for South Africa (Bafana Bafana)? FIFA Regulations May Nullify Mokoena’s Yellow Card Setback

Bafana Bafana, led by Hugo Broos, defeated Benin 2-0 at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny stadium on Tuesday night, putting them five points ahead in the Group C 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

But the victory followed worries that Teboho Mokoena’s participation, despite receiving two yellow cards prior to Bafana Bafana’s match against Lesotho last week, might jeopardize the team’s campaign.

Due to the two yellow cards, the star should have received a suspension for South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho, but that did not happen.

According to the publication, Bafana Bafana might not face consequences even though they violated the FIFA Disciplinary Code, even though his involvement might result in a points deduction.

Under carrying over cautions in the FIFA disciplinary code, it is evident that “if a person receives a caution in two separate matches of the same FIFA competition, they are automatically suspended from the next match in that competition.”

However, the code further states that “protests must reach the Disciplinary Committee in writing, indicating the relevant grounds, within 24 hours of the end of the match in question.

“The 24-hour time limit cannot be extended. For the sake of the smooth running of the competition, the corresponding competition regulations may shorten the protest deadline accordingly.”

After a 24-hour period, news of the fiasco was apparently noticed and reported, and supporters have since been persuaded that South Africa might not face consequences.

Given that Lesotho allegedly submitted their complaint after the 24-hour window, it is unclear if FIFA will take any action.

When they noted and filed a formal complaint, Mokhosi Mohapi, the secretary general of the Lesotho Football Association (LFA), did not publicly confirm.
