Euro 2025’s first day was fantastic! In Basel, Norway overcame a deficit to defeat the Swiss, while Finland won their first Women’s European Championship in sixteen years. Sky Sports examines how the event transpired.
In a wild match in Basel, Norway overcame a deficit to defeat Switzerland 2-1, with Ada Hegerberg scoring her 50th goal for her country even if she missed the penalty spot later.
As it became apparent that they couldn’t achieve the outcome, Swiss excitement waned, but their performance would inspire confidence before a clash with a lackluster Iceland. In addition to defeating a Euros host country on opening night for the first time since the group stage was instituted in 1997, Norway celebrated their third victory over Switzerland this season, all of which came by a single goal.
“Switzerland started better than us,” said Gemma Grainger, the coach of Norway, in an interview with womenseuro.com. They have my utmost regard, so I wasn’t shocked. We have big expectations for this squad, so we made some tactical adjustments because we believed we could take advantage of Switzerland. The players deserve all the credit for the intense conversation that took place at halftime.
Kosola stars as Finland down Iceland
Katariina Kosola helped a determined Finland to their first win at a European championships since 2009 – incidentally also the last time they progressed past the group stages at a major tournament.

Even though Iceland is the top-ranked team in Group A, they were flat and lacked rhythm after losing captain Glodis Viggosdottir to injury early in the match. Kosola’s incredible right-footed goal gave them a 1-0 victory.
Finland pressed for an early goal in what was expected to be a close and cagey match. Kosola kept firing warning shots, sliding inside onto her preferred foot and challenging Cecilia Ran Runarsdottir before finally breaking through halfway through the second half.
