FIFA’s redesigned Club World Cup has drawn harsh criticism from La Liga president Javier Tebas, who has called the 32-team competition “complete nonsense” and a direct danger to the viability of domestic leagues, especially La Liga in Spain.

Tebas charged FIFA with putting financial gain above of player welfare and league competition integrity in a heated news conference.

“This new Club World Cup is absurd, illogical, and harmful to football’s ecosystem,” Tebas declared. “FIFA doesn’t care about the players, the leagues, or the fans—they only care about money. Adding more games in an already packed schedule is complete nonsense.”

Top teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich will have to reschedule domestic league games in order to compete in the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be held in the United States next summer. Tebas said that FIFA’s schedule might cause major disruptions to La Liga, with important teams missing several games.

“We’re not just talking about one or two matches—this tournament will force us to reschedule entire rounds of La Liga, creating unfair advantages and disadvantages,” he said.

Tebas did not rule out legal action against FIFA, insisting that football’s governing body failed to properly consult leagues before finalizing plans.

“If FIFA continues to ignore the damage they’re causing, we will have no choice but to explore all options, including legal measures,” he warned.

FIFA has repeatedly justified the enlarged format, saying it will provide teams outside of Europe opportunity and “increase global interest” in club football. Tebas and other detractors contend that the competition primarily helps FIFA’s bottom line while putting a burden on leagues and players.

“If we don’t push back now, football as we know it will collapse under the weight of greed,” Tebas concluded.
