After suffering a catastrophic injury during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency abdominal surgery and is now out of an induced coma. He is doing well.
Late in the game, Taiwo was trying to grab a cross when he struck the goalpost. He was treated on the pitch, but he kept playing because every substitute was utilized. After his health deteriorated, he was admitted to the hospital the next day, where medical professionals found a burst intestine that needed immediate surgery.
Between two surgeries on Monday and Wednesday, Taiwo was put into an induced coma to help him recuperate and stabilize his condition. On Wednesday, Nottingham Forest announced that he had been roused from the coma and was making a full recovery.
Nottingham Forest has launched an internal inquiry into the medical team’s handling of the matter as a result of the criticism surrounding the decision to let Taiwo play after the accident.
While Awoni’s discharge date is still up in the air, the club expects him to fully recover.
