Matheus Nunes’ goal in stoppage time gave Manchester City a thrilling 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The victory strengthens City’s bid to qualify for the Champions League by moving them up to third position, ahead of Nottingham Forest.

In the seventh minute, Bernardo Silva completed a deft cutback from Omar Marmoush to give City the lead. But Villa reacted quickly; when a VAR review verified a foul on Jacob Ramsey, Marcus Rashford scored a penalty. Both teams created opportunities, and the game stayed evenly balanced.

In the 94th minute, Nunes pounced on a low cross from Jérémy Doku and slotted the ball home to give City the three points they needed. City has now defeated Villa at home for 15 straight games, demonstrating their supremacy at the Etihad.

Now that Pep Guardiola’s team is in third place, the race for Champions League slots is getting fiercer as the season draws to a close. Villa, on the other hand, lost an opportunity to further cement their own aspirations in Europe.
