Crystal Palace overcame adversity, Brentford snapped a lengthy home losing streak, and Manchester City and Aston Villa secured significant victories to increase their chances of making it to Europe on a day of pivotal Premier League action.
At Goodison Park, Manchester City defeated a gallant Everton squad 2-0 thanks to late goals from midfielder Mateo Kovacic and academy standout Nico O’Reilly. In the 73rd minute, O’Reilly broke the tie after Matheus Nunes’ cross, and Kovacic sealed the win in stoppage time. The result strengthens the race to earn a spot in the Champions League and places City in fourth position in the league.
At Villa Park, Aston Villa put on a strong show, defeating Newcastle United 4-1. After 30 seconds, Ollie Watkins scored the first goal, matching Gabby Agbonlahor’s club record of 74 Premier League goals. Ian Maatsen gave Villa the lead once again after Fabian Schar equalized, Dan Burn gave away the goal, and Amadou Onana scored late. After the victory, Villa is still very much in the race for a top-four finish.
Brentford ended their winless streak at home with a 4-2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo both played a significant role in the Bees’ offensive effort and helped to score the goal.
The visitors’ situation worsened when Brighton’s Joao Pedro was sent off. The victory maintained Brentford’s prospects of competing in Europe.
